about

Back in 2008, I was invited by Head for Arts to be a Song Consultant for a mammoth Community Festival across 4 Counties: Merthyr Tydfil, Blaenau Gwent, Torfaen & Caerphilly, called 'Festival of Four'.

My role was to meet as many of the community as I could, across these 4 counties. In total, I met and worked with over 800 people.

Then back home in my West Wales studio, I composed and recorded a collection of songs based on the life experiences of the people living in the Valleys in relation to the colloquialism 'Valleys Girl'.

I wrote the lyrics applying their conversational texts and perspectives.
This is a writing technique I have developed since first applying it at the age of 16 in a theatre group. It is called Ethnographic Poetics but I did not realise that until much later, when I was studying for my MA Drama in my forties. I have come to understand that there is usually a posh name for the things that come naturally to humans.

I composed 31 songs in total. These were submitted to the inspirational Artistic Director, Chris Durnall, who took the lyrics to apply as script text in the 4 productions.

I was invited to perform some of the songs at the 4 festivals & some of the tracks were used as backing for digital stories.

But many of the songs were not used as I had written far more than were needed.

I had forgotten all about these songs until I was putting my Music Archive together. I couldn't believe what an enormous body of work it was.

The Valley's Girl is my choice sample of the tracks.

It does not feel right to put a price on the Album but if you download it, it would be kind for you to donate what you can afford and this will be given to my Sound Memories Dementia Friendly Project to assist with recording Rural Sound Maps for those who can no longer come outside.

Likewise if you use the songs for any community projects please credit the work and put a link to my bandcamp page.

The Copyright of the songs remains with me as the writer.
